When an individual suffers a spinal cord injury, he or she may suffer a number of related effects. The individual may lose sensory feeling in a body part, or the individual may suffer nerve damage. Unfortunately, the injury may be even more severe.

Individuals who suffer serious trauma to their spinal cords may be left with quadriplegia, also known as complete paralysis. Quadriplegics usually cannot control any bodily functions involving body parts below the neck. This means that they often cannot even control their own breathing.

Quadriplegia is a life altering injury that may make an individual rely on his or her family for care and support. Victims of this condition usually cannot work or care for themselves because of their severely limited mobility.

Posts by RI Accident Lawyer David Slepkow:

Complete paralysis may occur for a number of reasons. An individual may be born with a genetic defect that causes him or her to become paralyzed over time. Other individuals may suffer seriously illnesses that take away their abilities to control their body parts.

Many individuals, though, become quadriplegics because of another person’s negligent actions. Examples of negligence that may cause an individual to suffer paralysis include:

  • Car accidents
  • Sports injuries
  • Slip and fall accidents
  • Gunshot wounds
  • Other forms of trauma to the spinal cord

Since these injuries may be the result of negligence, victims of these injuries may be entitled to financial compensation for their unnecessary pain and suffering. These individuals should seek experienced legal counsel before filing any sort of legal action against the responsible individuals.

Sufferers of quadriplegia owe it to themselves to hold the responsible individuals accountable for their actions.
